Hearts of Jolly for Topshop Unique

LONDON FASHION WEEK

My eyes glazed over for minute when I saw the Topshop Unique Spring 2009 collection which debuted just moments ago. Fortunately for the ones who didn’t enjoy the looks from the girlfriends of Depeche Mode, Bananarama, and other synth pop duos of 1982, today we saw a glimpse of just that. Girls in giant bow-tied headwraps, the stonewashed denim, and all the kitschy fifties influences that fueled a particular point in new wave history of London music and fashion. The heart prints, jumpsuits, parachute silk batwing tops, and trenches of all lengths were reworkings of new wave tailoring. With an infectious palette of the flavors of gelato, the bouncy jolly pieces hit several high notes in Brit high-fashion. Headed by Karen Bonser, the Topshop team has indeed ensured a successful outcome of eighties goodness. This array of giddy and playful pieces was the perfect order for the Topshop girl.

Nicholas Kirkwood is the New Christian Louboutin

Last winter our heads turned with quizzical looks as we saw towering models in Louboutin’s patent leather studded, sky-scraper heels wobble down the runway at Rodarte. This time the Rodarte sisters have chosen the London cobbler to craft their Spring footwear. All the front-row ladies—Leigh Lezark, Daisy Lowe, Selma Blair—have been spotted in Kirkwood’s mighty high architectural stilettos and cantilevered platform heels. Is Nicholas Kirkwood ready to step into the French maestro’s shoes? Style.com’s All The New That’s Fit To Print thinks so! They put together a really neat preview of what’s new for Spring 2009 and more like, Susie Bubble’s The Next Blah Blah Blah.

Preschool Tunics

I remember when cutting heart and moon shapes from folded paper was neverending fun, and oh, snowflakes were great, too.  The designers of Rabbit On the Run seem to have ran on this idea, making tunic tees from metallic and vivid cut-outs. The idea reflects the different, independent, free and spontaneous universe of Julie Thevnot. The patterns are a result of various experiments around cutting and folding for an unplanned symmetry, taking one step above my fashion preschool days. And the Pipeline gushes how the A/W ‘09 mini collection, Dakala and Disco Tee are works of art incoming from Paris to NYC . The coral Dakala version is sold out on Pixie Market in LA, but you can purchase them on Rabbit’s site. Maybe I’ll start a D.I.Y project if I can find some eye-popping fabrics and shears!
